Wellmune Provides Immune Support as People Age, Published Study Suggests

Published on: May 11 2017

Taking Wellmune®, the natural immune health ingredient, led to fewer upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) and reduced the duration of URTI symptoms in older adults, a new study suggests. The study was recently published in the clinical journal, Nutrition and hints at the potential for Wellmune to improve general immune health during aging.

“As we age, our immune system slows and impacts the body’s ability to fight off health challenges such as respiratory infections,” said Donald Cox, Ph.D., Director of R&D for Wellmune. “This study not only demonstrates the immune health benefits Wellmune can provide older adults but builds upon on a body of published research showing Wellmune can improve general immune health.”

Wellmune is a natural food, beverage and supplement ingredient clinically proven to help strengthen the immune system. A proprietary baker’s yeast beta 1,3/1,6 glucan, Wellmune is supported by over a dozen clinical studies. Research has shown Wellmune is safe and can help promote healthy energy levels and mental clarity.

The population of the world is getting older, presenting both a challenge and opportunity for product manufacturers. With more older adults moving towards a preventative approach to their health, immune health is a sought after benefit for this consumer group. Meeting aging consumers’ needs for safe, effective products that help them realize their wellness goals will bring innovation into the market.

“We are committed to providing a safe and natural immune health ingredient backed by credible science,” added Don Cox. “This research can help communicate the efficacy and reinforce the immune health benefits of Wellmune. It also helps our customers develop products that meet the demands of a growing consumer segment, so seniors can be well and stay well.”

Study Protocol and Results:

The study was conducted by the University of Southampton in the UK, with 100 healthy adults aged 50-70 years consuming 250 mgs of Wellmune or a placebo for 90 days. Conducted during the peak cold and flu season, the study was randomized, double-blinded and placebo controlled. Results showed daily supplementation with oral beta 1,3/1,6 glucan [Wellmune] may protect against URTIs and reduce the duration of URTI symptoms once present in older people. This may be linked to effects on innate immune function. Larger studies are needed to confirm the benefits of beta 1,3/1,6 glucan on URTIs in older people.
