Study – BC30™ Probiotic Can Reduce How Often Kids Get Cold Symptoms

Published on: Mar 20 2020

A  study published in Food Research International has shown that BC30™ probiotic has benefits for immune health and digestive health in kids. Specifically, it can reduce how often kids show cold symptoms like nasal congestion, itchy nose, and hoarseness. It also had positive effects on digestive health measures like flatulence frequency and stool consistency.

The study data reported that BC30 (Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6068) may have the ability to modulate the immune response, based on beneficial effects on upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms.

Previous studies have shown that BC30 can reduce gastrointestinal symptoms in adults with post-prandial intestinal gas-related symptoms, and improves pain and bloating in IBS sufferers. This data is the first to demonstrate these probiotic benefits in kids.

Eighty healthy school-aged children in Mexico took part in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. They received a flavored water containing either BC30 (1 billion CFU) or a placebo, daily for 12 weeks.

Since BC30 is a spore-forming probiotic, it is appropriate for many product categories beyond things like refrigerated yogurt. The findings from this study, combined with flexibility in formulation, mean exciting things for food innovation for kids.
