Changes to Nutrient Daily Values Will Impact Content Claims for Some Nutrients in 2018 (USA)

Published on: Mar 9 2017

In 2016, the FDA announced a multitude of changes coming to nutrition labeling in the United States, requiring most companies to comply by July 2018.

Among these changes were updates to the percent daily values for a multitude of nutrients. For example, daily values of fiber, calcium, and potassium will increase. Since foods must contain a specified amount of a nutrient to make a content claim (e.g. “Source of”, “Excellent source of”), changing percent daily values means the required nutrient content to make claims will also change.

This resource from Watson Inc is a great tool to see which nutrients have changing daily values, including an infographic summary.
